ABSTRACT
Microspheres of ciprofloxacin were formulated using natural
polymer of Guargum and Xanthan gum by ionic crosslinking
technique with an aim to prolong its release. Six
formulations prepared by using different drug to polymer
ratios, were evaluated for relevant parameters. Depending
upon the drug to polymer ratio of Guar gum , the
encapsulation efficiency , drug content and yield were found
to range between 78.6±1.3 to 90.9±1.8%, 83.67±3.4 to
87.38±2.6% and 93.24±2.6 to 95.43±4.7%, respectively. Also
the drug to polymer ratio of Xanthan gum , the encapsulation
efficiency, drug content and yield were found to range
between 64.80 ±0.025 to 68.20±0.059%, 83.83±1.76 to
88.92±1.90% and 92.38±0.045 to 93.46±0.038%, respectively.
Microspheres were spherical, discrete and compact and size
distribution was between 463 to 693 μm. In vitro studies were
carried out at different pH for a period of 10 hr. In the
formulation using Guar gum GG2 was 84.02 and Xanthan
gum XG2 was 82.34 for better release.
